Are you in need of dental implants? At Secure Dental, we provide implants for patients from Peoria, Springfield, and the surrounding areas whose teeth need to be replaced. Nothing replaces your natural teeth, but dental implants come close.
Implants have been used for many generations, and the technology has improved over time. These man-made “anchors” look like screws and are made of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. During surgery, the tooth implants are placed into the upper or lower jaw where they replace the roots of your missing teeth.
An implant looks and acts like a natural tooth. It fits securely even when you chew and speak. A single tooth implant does not involve treatment to your other teeth. Patients may choose dental implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support partial or full dentures.
While some people may not be bothered by a missing tooth, the loss can have significant effects beyond the merely aesthetic. Missing teeth may affect the way you speak and chew. If a missing tooth is not replaced, the teeth around it can move. This can affect your bite and place more stress on your teeth and jaw joints. Teeth that have tipped or drifted are also hard to clean. This puts them at a higher risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Replacements can help fill out a face that could look “sunken” because of missing teeth. Lastly, dental implants can prevent further bone loss in the jaw.
The way implants are placed depends on the patient, the type of implant, and the tooth being replaced. Some implants require two or three appointments and can take up to a year to complete. With others, called immediate load implants, the implant and a temporary crown can be placed on the same day. The dentists at Secure Dental will discuss which type is best for you.
Dr. Liu or Dr. Jafri surgically places the implant into the jawbone. There may be some swelling and tenderness after the surgery, so pain medication is usually prescribed to ease the discomfort. The doctors generally recommend a diet of soft foods during the healing process.
What makes an implant so strong is that the bone actually grows around it and holds it in place. This process is called osseointegration (Oss-e-o-in-te-GRAY-shun), meaning it “combines with the bone.”
Osseointegration takes time. Some patients might need to wait until the implant is completely integrated, which can take several months. Others have the implant and the replacement tooth placed all in one visit.
Dr. Liu and Dr. Jafri can help you decide if you can get dental implants. Good candidates are in general good health because chronic illnesses such as diabetes or leukemia may slow healing after surgery and prevent successful placement. If you have lost bone in your jaw, you may need bone grafting to make your jaw capable of receiving implants. Smokers are less than ideal candidates for implants because tobacco use may be linked to a higher rate of implant failure.
Good oral hygiene is very important to the success of the implant. You’ll need to make sure the area around the implant is especially clean. Dr. Liu and Dr. Jafri may recommend that you use a special interproximal toothbrush or a mouth rinse to help prevent gum problems. Watch this implant video to learn more about the process.
